Hey Sam. I am sorry to hear of your troubles! When an engine on a generator runs but the generator does not produce electricity, it can be a variety of problems from a simple circuit breaker trip all the way to a bad generator end. My standby generator will not start. I put a new battery in, but when I put it on run nothing happens. Where should I troubleshoot?

Jonathan, it is unfortunate that it didn’t start. Inside the engine control module box, which your toggle switch is on, is a 3/4 amp fuse. Nothing happens if that fuse is blown. You need to remove that box from the rear of the unit and open it to get at the fuse. Sorry they didn’t make it easier 20 years ago. You can call our Service Department for further guidance if needed @ 507-357-6831. Thanks.

Question
harold st peter –
Model 303447. When the toggle switch is set to run the engine will not turn over and there is a rapid clicking sound coming from either the solenoid or starter. I replaced the solenoid and now there is a slight wine and the engine will still not turn over.

The battery likely became overcharged creating hydrogen gas as a byproduct. In an enclosed area, the hydrogen can be ignited by a spark or flame and explode the compartment it is in.
Since the battery exploded while the unit wasn’t running there is most likely a problem with the battery charger. If you also have the Winco transfer switch connected to this model we would recommend disconnecting the battery positive wire on the transfer switch DC terminal block. We would then recommend installing a stand-alone battery tender. The Winco part we would recommend for this unit is 16287-001.
After the charger is fixed you can replace the exploded battery. Disconnect the defective battery cables, negative first, and then clean up battery acid with a solution of baking soda and water. A common practice is to use a solution of one pound of baking soda to one gallon of water. The baking soda solution is to be added until the evidence of reaction, foaming, has ceased. The resulting liquid is to be flushed with water and the area dried.

Question
william crook –
My PSS8000N will only supply about 3000 watts before the engine looses RPM’s. It’s got only 400 hours on it, with new plugs and air filter. Synthetic oil changed every 100 hours. It has never cut out on low oil pressure. I am able to adjust the regulator to an over rich condition, so the problem shouldn’t be fuel starvation. It was a good running system until abruptly; it just suddenly wouldn’t perform. Your thoughts?

William,
I would recommend adjusting the valves. It is part of the engine maintenance schedule at 250 hours. Under “Service & Support” click on “Engine Support”, then go to Briggs & Stratton. There you will find a guide for adjusting the valves.

Question
Rance O –
My PSS 8000 is 23 years old and has run faultlessly as a backup to my off grid PV power system. After being idle over the summer, this fall the 3/4 amp fuse in the ECM has blown several times. Any ideas what might be causing that?

Anthony, the engine control module box is inside the housing. Locate the toggle switch. The toggle switch is mounted to the box assembly. The illustrated parts list is on this page as well. If you have further questions please contact our Technical Support Department @ 507-357-8334 or [email protected].
