Nate, without testing I do not know why it quite producing power. Hopefully it blew one of the small capacitors (condenser). You can disconnect them and re-test. They are not needed for AC output and were put in the generator for radio frequency suppression. I added a troubleshooting guide to your model.

Rick, the DC commutator on armature acts as a starter motor if you connect a battery to the generator set. There is a start button on the panel.
